Club Good Practice Sharing and Best Practices Awards
If you have a problem at your club that needs solving would you rather:
- spend a long time searching for solutions, starting at the beginning; or
- use someone else’s idea as a start point, then customise it to suit your club?
We know that there are many things in gliding clubs that could be done better (if only there was time to do it all), but we also know that all gliding clubs have already come up with at least one clever solution that another club would find useful.
The BGA wishes to encourage Clubs to develop and then to share innovative and effective good practices in all aspects of their management and operations.
Clubs have shown in recent years that they are willing to share ideas and to collaborate – even in situations that might initially be viewed as competitive. Given the opportunity, clubs that have developed a new concept are often keen to share details and display their achievements to others.
Now there’s a simple way to share good practice... and just in case you still need further encouragement, there is an annual prize for the best contribution.

Why re-invent the wheel? Clubs are increasingly showing that they are willing to share and help each other with ideas and mutual support. This scheme aims to formalise that process a little and to bring your ideas to the attention of other clubs that may not otherwise be aware of them.
Please contribute ideas that have been practised and tested at your club, which you think are capable of being adapted for the benefit of members at other BGA clubs. Ideas may be anything – small or large – the main criterion is that you should feel that introducing the idea has had a significant and positive impact on your club’s operations.
We are particularly looking for innovative and effective ideas in any aspect of club management and operations, including for example in the following fields:-
- Membership recruitment
- Membership retention
- Project finance
- Other financial management
- Design of buildings and facilities
- Operational safety
- Operational efficiency or effectiveness
- Disabled flying and DDA compliance
- Site protection and aerodrome safeguarding
- Noise limitation and control or other environmental practice
- Site supervision
- Advanced training or coaching
- Community benefit
- Local PR and community liaison
- Effective management of volunteers
- Use of technology
- Sport development

Awards
In order to encourage you to contribute, the BGA is offering an annual award for the idea judged to be the best.
The Awards offered will be in the form of free places at BGA instructors’ courses (BI, Assistant or Full Cat.)
Group Assessment Process
A small group consisting of the BGA Chief Executive, Chairman of the Development Committee and a Development Officer will assess applications from member clubs and make awards recommendations to the BGA Executive Committee. Advice or observations from relevant experts in specific areas may be sought.
Criteria for Awards
Innovative – ideas must have either something completely new, or apply existing ideas or methods in a new way.
Effective – must have been in use for a sufficient period of time for measurable benefits to be identified.
Evidence of other clubs already adopting/borrowing the idea will be seen as a positive factor in assessing the concept.
Follow up
Clubs receiving an award will be requested to assist in the promulgation of information about their projects for the benefit of British gliding and to help and advise other member clubs wishing to implement their recommendations.
