Sporting Code

The FAI Sporting Code deals with rules concerning badge claims, records and international competitions. The documents for section 3 (which deals with gliding) can be found at:

www.fai.org/igc-documents

under "Sporting Code and Gliding Rules Section 3: Gliding". In particular, the Official Observer and Pilot Guide (Annex C) can then be found under the "annexes" subsection.

Approved Flight and Position Recorders

The definitive list of IGC approved flight recorders is held on the FAI web site. Note that this list may not be fully up-to-date and an alternative source of information is at http://www.ukiws.demon.co.uk/GFAC/.

A number of position recorders have, in addition, been approved by the BGA to support claims for silver and gold badge claims, supplemented where appropriate by independent evidence of pressure altitude. These approved position recorders are:

flyWithCE
flyWithCE FR300
Oudie
QSTARTZ BT-Q1000X

Turnpoints

The definitive turn-point lists are kept by Tim Newport-Peace. You can dowload them from www.spsys.demon.co.uk/turningpoints.htm. Links on the site also include the Worldwide Turnpoint Exchange

You can get worldwide turnpoints from soaringweb.org/TP.

Over 300 Visual Reference Points (VRPs) are also defined. However, these are not to be used as turn-points, except where there is a coincidental BGA turn-point. Many are in restricted/prohibited airspace. Nonetheless, knowledge of them can be useful when talking to ATC units, where your position can be given as a range/bearing from a VRP. For more information on use of VRPs, look at http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/aic/EG_Circ_2010_Y_084_en.pdf. Files of VRPs for use with PDAs are now available and can be referenced via http://www.spsys.demon.co.uk/waypoints/vrp.htm

(Note that PDA data files are used at your own risk. The BGA accepts no liability for any use made of these files).
