Sailplane Grand Prix 20th February 2006
The UK Qualifying Gliding Grand Prix has been added into this seasons calendar in early September. The Cambridge Gliding Centre will host the event. The Soaring Grand Prix is a new type of International competition intended to make competition gliding understandable to the public and attractive to potential sponsors. A few years ago, the IGC sanctioned a bi-annual World Grand Prix , the first of which was at St. Auban in France in 2005. The venue for the 2007 WGP is as yet undecided but bids have been received from Minden in USA, South Africa and New Zealand.
The BGA Competition Committee have ensured that we have our own qualifier to ensure that our UK pilots who are interested in this exciting new format can participate fully and have an opportunity of qualification for the next WGP which essentially revolves around a top three place. The rules and details of all aspects of GP worldwide including the results of the first QGP in series in New Zealand can be found on the IGC website at www.fai.org/gliding/sgp.
Entry will be online via the BGA website and is expected to be up and running within two weeks. To get further email updates, go to www.gliding.co.uk/subscriptions, sign up and make sure you tick the box for ‘competitions’.

Dates - Mandatory official practise day - 3rd September 2006
Contest flying - 4th to 9th September 2006

It may be possible to enter additionally via the IGC website in due course (designed for overseas application) but the BGA entry portal will remain the controlling list.

Development Training Update 4th January 2006
Due to an email problem, we ask that everyone who applied for the development training since 19th December resends their application to training@gliding.co.uk
2006 Development Training Program 18th December 2005
The British Coaching Squad would like to invite applications for this year’s development training. With the 2007 Junior World Championships in Rieti approaching fast and only two of this year’s team eligible, we would particularly like to encourage pilots aspiring to get into the Junior World Team to apply. However, as in previous years, the training week is open to pilots of any age that have potential to fly for Great Britain in the future.
The dates of the Development Training will be 16th-22nd April and 23rd – 29th April based in Ontur, and requires one week’s participation. The training is run by members of the Senior Coaching Squad and provides an enormous opportunity to train with Britain’s most experienced world championship pilots.

ASH 25 & Crew Available 10th December 2005
The Scottish Gliding Association (SGA) is offering its ASH25 to experienced competition pilots for a number of 2006 competitions.
The deal:
You get the aircraft for 2 weeks, allowing time for practise before the competition. The aircraft will come fully equipped with 2 SGA pilots who will alternate as second pilot / crew.
Offered to: Seasoned competition pilots who are experienced in open class/ flapped gliders (a check flight may be required) who are avle to fly and talk at the same time so you can explain your decision making, tactics, etc to your P2.
The catch: None - you just have to be available for the whole 2 weeks and you have to fly with the P2s supplied.
Why is the SGA doing this?
In a word, coaching. The SGA experience with John Tanner in the P1 role over the last 2 years has convinced them of the value (for their members) of flying with a top notch P1.
Just for Scottish pilots? No! There are plenty of
top notch Scottish pilots (just look at the National Ladder!). The SGA’s problem is finding the right combination of talent, experience, “competition sharpness”, and not least availability, which is why they have decided to widen the net for 2006 and invite bids from further afield.
If you are interested and would like to know more or submit a bid, please contact the SGA Ops Comimittee Chairman, Mike Carruthers

2006 Pre-Worlds at Bailleau SW of Paris, training may include mentoring

15 Metre Nationals Payment 21st
June 2005
Due to unforseen circumstances, the cheques sent for the entry
fee to the 15m Nationals at Honington have not been cashed yet.
All cheques sent so far should be cashed within the next couple
of weeks. Any urgent queries regarding this payment can be directed
towards the RAF GSA centre at Halton (01296 696818).
Insurance Compliance Checking - Random
Checks at Competitions 1st June 2005
The BGA has been working with the CAA, which is responsible for
monitoring compliance with the new EU aircraft insurance regulations,
to minimise the impact of compliance checking. We have been successful
in removing the proposed requirement that glider owners and operators
would have to submit evidence of cover on an annual basis and carry
this with them at all times in the glider. In its place, there will
be a system of random compliance checks. We believe that
it is very likely that the CAA will target a number of competitions
over the summer and that they will want to check the insurance documentation
of all competitors at these events. Competitors at all
national and regional events are strongly recommended to have a
legally compliant insurance document with them on site. CAA staff
have powers of prosecution for non compliance.

international competition for Club Class pilots, to be held in the
Appenines from 18 to 25 July. The Coppa Internazionale del Mediterraneo
Club Class will be held at Rieti and will offer a rare opportunity
to fly in a highly competitive international contest, using strong
thermals, convergences, occasional waves and reliable ridge lift,
with a Club Class glider. The competition will be held under Italian
rules for the class, allowing access to older Standard class gliders
with a maximum DAeC index of 1,06 and also to older flapped designs
such as the DG200, LS3 and ASW20. A detailed list of allowed glider
types is available on the FIVV
website. Ballasti is prohibited. The competition is fully registered
for the IGC Pilots' Ranking List.
