BGA Motor Gliding - Instructing & Examining

Many BGA clubs operate self-launching motor gliders (SLMG), offering a wide range of training and other enjoyable flying, all at modest cost.

Instruction in these motor gliders may be offered only by instructors holding a motor glider instructor rating.  There are currently two entirely separate instructor ratings:  details are in the BGA’s Laws and Rules

BGA MGIR Administration

The BGA MGIR is not a stand-alone rating. The BGA MGIR is only valid when llinked to a valid BGA Full or in some cases, Assistant instructor rating. However, the BGA MGIR is subject to revalidation requirements - see Laws and Rules for details.

Initial Issue
Initial issue of the MGIR follows a test by an approved examiner. The examiner and
applicant should complete a BGA Instructor Form 1 which must be forwarded to the BGA office. The
examiner will issue an MGIR Rating Card (gold coloured).

Variations to the Rating
Additions or variances to the MGIR should be recorded by the examiner on the instructors MGIR
Rating Card (gold coloured). The examiner must retain the test record.

Revalidation/Renewal
Revalidations of the MGIR should be recorded by the examiner on the instructors MGIR Rating Card
(gold coloured). The examiner must retain the test record.

CAA's FI(SLMG) Rating

The FI(SLMG) is a national rating issued by the CAA; details of initial issue and revalidation are in LASORS  Section H9.

Training and examining for this rating are managed by the BGA’s Senior Regional Examiner (Motor Gliders).  Normal practice is for a candidate to undergo an assessment flight, followed by appropriate training and then the competency Flight Test referred to in LASORS. Candidates are advised that the overheads associated with this training are such that refunds are unavailable for cancellations.

Note: Training and testing for power licences may take place only at either licenced airfields or BGA sites specified here.

Advice – taken from the CAA’s TRAININGCOM 1/2008
“We regularly receive applications from instructors to be authorised as examiners, particularly FE PPL.  Sometimes we have difficulty justifying the authorisation of additional examiners as our records indicate that several are already listed as available, either at that particular airfield, or within a reasonable distance.  Further enquiries often reveal, however, that some of these examiners have moved on, are no longer active or are otherwise unavailable for test.

Therefore, if you are (or know of) an examiner who is no longer active, please inform (or prompt him/her to inform) the CFE via PLD at Gatwick to enable us to update our list of examiner availability.

Whilst on the topic of examiner availability:  all examiners are expected to be professional and courteous and their integrity should be above reproach.  They should also be impartial and apply the test and check standards fairly, without favour and to common standards.  Therefore, although it may seem advantageous for schools and clubs to have a designated examiner on the staff, it should not be necessary.”
