How do I become an Instructor?

Its not that difficult and once qualified, it's a highly rewarding way of putting something back into the sport while flying.

Rating Requirements & Privileges

In all cases, the latest BGA "Laws and Rules for Glider Pilots" refers (available from BGA shop).

Rating and Privilege

Requirements

Basic Instructor (BI)

May give Basic Gliding Instruction at CFI discretion

Silver C

Minimum 50 hrs P1 gliding

CFI recommendation

Certificate of medical fitness

Completion of appropriate BGA instructor course

Acceptance by CFI issuing rating


Assistant Instructor (AI)

May give gliding instruction as specifically authorised by the CFI

As per BI rating other than:

Minimum 75 hrs gliding AND 100 launches P1


Full Instructor (FI)

May give gliding instruction subject to the discretion of the CFI

Silver C

Minimum 150 hrs P1 gliding

Certificate of medical fitness

Test by BGA Examiner


Aerobatic Instructor

May give instruction in advanced aerobatic manoeuvres as authorised by a BGA Aerobatics Examiner

Hold BGA gliding AI or FI rating

Complete an approved aerobatic instructor course

Test by BGA Aerobatics Examiner


BGA Motor Glider Instructor (BGA MGIR)

May give gliding instruction in an SLMG subject to the discretion of the CFI and the limitations of the individual MGIR issue. Details are on the Motor Gliding page

BGA gliding FI rating

Current JAR TMG or UK SLMGPPL or NPPL SLMG

Test by BGA Examiner

 

Suspension and Reinstatement

BGA Laws and Rules clearly describe that a gliding instructor rating is automatically suspended following any gliding accident. Details of the suspension and reinstatement process are available by following this link.


Credits Towards the Issue of BGA Instructor Ratings

Holders of a non-BGA but BGA recognised gliding instructor rating must be tested by a BGA approved examiner prior to the issue of an appropriate equivalent BGA instructor rating. The pilot must hold a BGA GPL and following a test by a BGA examiner must submit a completed BGA instructor form 1 to the BGA office along with a photocopy of the pilots existing instructor rating.

Powered flying experience

P1 flying experience on fixed wing aircraft will count as follows:

5 hrs P1 powered fixed wing equals 1 hr P1 on a glider, provided that at least 35 hrs and 100 launches has been flown as P1 in gliders.

A maximum of 10 hrs of the 35 hrs in gliders may be flown in SLMG without depreciation. Refer to BGA Laws and Rules for further detail.


Air Cadet A, B or C Category Gliding Instructor only - Air Cadet motor glider instructors may not convert to BGA instructor ratings without meeting the complete instructor initial issue requirements

May convert to a BGA instructor rating;

'A Cat' can convert to BGA gliding AI

'B Cat' can convert to BGA gliding AI

'C Cat' can convert to BGA gliding BI

providing the appropriate rating issue requirement hours and launches flown are met (see above), including 10 hrs solo, and either:

Attendance at an appropriate approved BGA Instructor course, or, exceptionally,

Local training and testing with a BGA BI coach, RE or SRE
