Part M

Introduction

The BGA is continuing to develop its Part M compliant airworthiness organisation to meet the specific needs of gliding clubs and owners of gliders, SLMG's and tug aircraft. The BGA, working for and on behalf of its membership, will under Part M continue to provide for safe, efficient and compliant airworthiness using a mix of fundamentally volunteer resources as well as some professional support.

Change to BGA Airworthiness Organisation - Updated 25th November 2009

The BGA airworthiness process and owners’ interface to the BGA airworthiness organisation remains unchanged for Annex 2 gliders.

BGA inspectors are authorised under the BGA Part M subpart F approval rather than nationally by the CAA. They can only work on, certify or issue an ARC to EASA gliders and other EASA aircraft that are within the BGA airworthiness organisation. Until 1st January 2010, all gliders in the UK are deemed to be within the BGA airworthiness organisation.

From 1st January 2010, the small number of gliders or other aircraft whose ARCs are not renewed through the BGA can only be maintained or released to service by BGA inspectors if the gliders have been specifically brought into the BGA airworthiness organisation. An application form is available here.

We estimate that 90% or more of owners will be unaffected by the changes effective from 1st January 2010.

This document with FAQ's explains the changes in detail and in particular;

  • How, without disrupting their existing arrangements, the small number of affected owners can continue to use BGA inspectors and have access to BGA airworthiness support by ensuring that their EASA glider or other EASA aircraft is within the BGA airworthiness organisation
  • How BGA inspectors can ensure that they remain compliant with the BGA Airworthiness Exposition and inspector liability insurance requirements
