European Championship Successes

The European Gliding Championships for the 15m, 18m and Open classes, held at Lasham, Hants has just ended.

The British team put in a great performance netting 5 of the 9 medals up for competition in this, the first senior FAI international championship held in the UK since the 1965 World Championships at South Cerney.

Tim Scott and Gary Stingemore took silver and bronze respectively in the 15m Class, and Mike Young also won silver in the 18m Class. Three time champion, Pete Harvey finished second in the Open Class with World Champion, Russell Cheetham third. With the European silver medal won by the British pair of Steve Jones and Garry Coppin in the 20m Two-Seat Class earlier this month at Moravska Trebova in the Czech Republic, this caps a great season for Team GB.

With 10 competition flying days at Lasham, an experienced and successful event organisation and the club’s unbeatable facilities, the championship proved that the UK is capable of hosting gliding championships at the highest level. Congratulations to everybody, competitors and organisers alike. More information and full results are on the Championship website.
