V3 June 07 BGA Environmental Policy Statement The British Gliding Association (BGA) is an association of independent member clubs and individual pilots. In adopting this Environmental Policy, the BGA recognizes that it is not able to control the activities and actions of its members. The BGA will however, whenever possible and appropriate, encourage, advise and assist its members in the adoption of sound environmental principles, including the adoption of this policy. Although gliding is one of the purer forms of manned flight, the sport and its participants inevitably make an impact on the environment. The BGA is working towards a policy to minimise any potentially significant impacts of gliding on the environment, by promoting environmental awareness and performance at all levels of decision-making. In defining our approach to environmental performance, the BGA will aim to; 1. Comply with the letter and spirit of all relevant environmental legislation 2. Adopt the principles and practice of the FAI Environmental Commission Code of Conduct for Air Sports available at http://www.fai.org/environment/code_conduct 3. Promote efficient use of energy, materials and supplies in all areas of the BGA activities and wherever possible, use materials that have been previously used or re-cycled 4. Re-cycle materials wherever practical and where this is not possible, dispose of unavoidable waste items in a harmless fashion. 5. Where possible minimise the need to travel, and when having to travel, make choices that minimise environmental impacts 6. Ensure that BGA staff and volunteers are aware of the environmental impacts of their activities and to minimise those impacts 7. Pursue a programme of continuous improvement of this policy and practice 8. Ensure that this policy is available for public review on request. This policy will be reviewed on a regular basis to evaluate continued relevance. Chief Executive June 2007
