CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY Rules of the Air Regulations 2007 EXEMPTION FROM RULE 18 - FLIGHTS IN CLASS A AIRSPACE 1. The Civil Aviation Authority in exercise of its powers under Article 242 of the Air Navigation Order 2009 ("the Order"), hereby exempts the aircraft specified in paragraph 2 hereof when flying within the airspace specified at paragraph 3 hereof ("the specified airspace") from the requirement to comply with Rule 18 of the Rules of the Air Regulations 2007 ("the Rules") subject to the conditions set out in paragraph 4 hereof. 2. Any glider practising for or participating in the Midlands Regionals Gliding Championship competition and flying from Husbands Bosworth Aerodrome and any aeroplane on a flight during any part of which it has towed such a glider. 3. The airspace forming that part of the London Terminal Control Area bounded by: 520835N 0011700W – 522048N 0010740W – 521355N 0010026W – 521049N 0010650W – 520835N 0011700W from 4500 to 5500 feet above mean sea level. 4. (1) An aircraft shall not fly pursuant to this exemption unless the commander of the aircraft has received from the competition organiser a full briefing on the airspace limits including in particular the need to contain the flights within the vertical and lateral limits of the specified airspace. (2) An aircraft shall not fly pursuant to this exemption unless - (a) before entering the specified airspace the commander of the aircraft shall have obtained the permission of the Air Traffic Control Unit at London Terminal Control (Swanwick) in respect of the flight; and (b) whilst flying within the specified airspace the commander of the aircraft complies with any conditions subject to which that permission may have been granted. (3) On any flight pursuant to this exemption the aircraft shall remain at least 1500 metres horizontally and 1000 feet vertically away from any cloud and in a flight visibility of at least 5 kilometres. (4) On any flight pursuant to this exemption the commander of the aircraft shall maintain a listening watch on the appropriate frequency specified by the competition organiser and comply promptly with any instructions given by or on behalf of the competition organiser to vacate the specified airspace. (5) On any flight pursuant to this exemption the commander of the aircraft is responsible for the avoidance of collisions and for maintaining separation from other gliders and towing aircraft. 1 5. This exemption shall have effect from 23 July 2011 to 31 July 2011 (both dates inclusive) between 1000 hours and 1800 hours UTC unless previously revoked, varied or suspended. Signed Dave Drake Controlled Airspace Section Directorate of Airspace Policy for the Civil Aviation Authority Date 5 July 2011 NOTES TASKS FOR THE COMPETITION ORGANISER (1) The competition organiser is to ensure that all competitors and tug pilots are given a full briefing on the airspace limits with particular emphasised on containing the flights within the vertical and lateral limits of the specified airspace. (2) The competition organiser shall advise the Terminal Control Group Supervisor (North) at London Terminal Control (Swanwick) (Tel 02380 401103) each day at least 30 minutes prior to the start of gliding activity and also on the completion or cancellation of the day's operations and will obtain permission for gliders and tugs to operate within the specified airspace in accordance with this exemption. Exceptionally the Group Supervisor (North) may specify additional conditions with the permission. The competition organiser is responsible for ensuring that all competitors and tug pilots are aware of the permission and any additional conditions specified (see para 4(2) of the Exemption). The TC Group Supervisor (North) will advise ATC at London Luton Airport. (3) The competition organiser shall ensure that he/she or a designated representative can be contacted by the TC Group Supervisor (North) throughout the entire period of gliding operations. (4) The competition organiser shall ensure that a means of communicating with glider and tug pilots operating in the specified airspace is available.
