ANNEX B Portmoak Gliding Area Effective: 7th December 2013 Revised: 11th December 2014 Annex B describes the TRA(G) airspace which is accessible by the Scottish Gliding Union (Portmoak) and the procedures for entry thereto. Maps are displayed on page B3. B.1. AIRSPACE B.1.1 The Scottish Gliding Union (Portmoak) has the authority to request activation of the following TRA(G) by contacting the Scottish AC (Prestwick) Operations Supervisor who shall in turn coordinate with their respective military colleague. GENERAL PROCEDURES B.2.1 Operations within TRA(G) shall be conducted under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Access arrangements and VMC minima for glider access to TRA(G) are published in the UK AIP. Activation of a TRA(G) for glider activity does not preclude VFR operations within that area by other traffic. B.2.2 This area can only be activated at weekends. B.2.3 This area can only be activated during daylight hours. B.2.4 When requesting activation of the Portmoak TRA(G), giving 2 hours notice, the gliding club representative may also request “Activation pending an R/T call”. This pending activation shall be coordinated by the Scottish AC (Prestwick) Operations Supervisor with their military colleague. The Scottish TAY sector will be advised of the pending activation but may continue to use the airspace until it is activated by R/T. This process may be used on days where it is likely, but not confirmed that activity above FL195 is possible. Glider pilots will call on Scottish frequency 124.5Mhz and request activation, giving at least 15 mins notice in NATS/LATCC (Mil)/BGA/BAE Warton (TRA(G)s) LoA 07/12/13 Annex B Revised 11/12/14 Page B-1 order to allow IFR traffic to be cleared from the Area. Scottish ATC may delay the activation of the area by issuing a “Not Before Time” in order to clear the airspace. The Scottish AC (Prestwick) Operations Supervisor is responsible for confirming activation with his military colleague. Any promulgation of the TRA(G) activity shall be from the earliest possible activation time to the latest closure time. Once activated ATC shall treat the airspace as an active TRA(G) until closure of the airspace is confirmed by telephone or the agreed end time has elapsed. B.2.5 ATC may provide a Basic Service to aircraft within the Portmoak Area. The responsibility for collision avoidance shall rest entirely with the pilots in accordance with the Rules of the Air. A Basic Service may be available, subject to workload, from Scottish Control on frequency 124.5 MHz. B.2.6 When within an active TRA(G), FL240 and below, any glider pilot not accepting a Basic Service shall monitor frequency 130.1 MHz. B.2.7 When the Portmoak area is activated, Scottish AC (Prestwick) and LATCC (Mil) shall not allow IFR traffic to transit the TRA(G) at the levels reserved for TRA(G) activation. Additionally, Scottish AC (Prestwick) and LATCC (Mil) shall not allow IFR traffic to operate within 5nm of the edge of an activated TRA(G). There may be instances, such as an emergency, when IFR traffic may be required to transit an active TRA(G). In such circumstances the Scottish AC (Prestwick) Operations Supervisor shall endeavour to close the TRA(G) through telephone with the operating club and through relayed transmissions on the appropriate gliding frequency. B.2.8 Transponder equipped gliders should squawk 7006 when operating above FL195 unless allocated a specific squawk by ATC. B.2.9 The Portmoak Area must be activated in conjunction with the activation of the P600 Gliding Area as described in the LoA between NATS, MoD and the BGA/SGU. When both procedures are activated the P600 delegated area shall extend to FL195 in the areas where it is contiguous with the Portmoak TRA(G).
