SZD 50-3 Puchacz Reported by BGA Accident investigators (Advisory) During a recent accident investigation it was noticed that the air brake bevel gears, attaching structure, in the left wing was poorly bonded during manufacture. It is not thought that this contributed to a recent accident, however special attention should be taken in this area during routine inspections. With many CAA, BGA and other official documents being used directly from the internet there is a danger that the paper versions are not being updated. These documents and publications sometimes are still used for reference. 1 TNS 10/04 It is very important that the user is aware that the paper copy may not be at the latest revision status. To satisfy this requirement you have a number of options: 1/ Ensure the paper copy is revised 2/ Remove the publication from use 3/ Clearly mark the publication “Uncontrolled Copy– for reference only” to make doubly sure you could add “Please refer to web site for latest issue” 3.2 Airworthiness Notice 20 – Fabric Inspection When carrying out fabric inspections in accordance with AWN 20 it is required that accurate details are recorded in the log book detailing the extent of the areas inspected. This is especially important if the inspections are phased, such as detailed inspection of the wings one year and fuselage the next. See paragraph 4.1.3. for detail. It is recommended that if you have not read this notice for some time you re acquaint yourself with it. 3.3 Recovery of damaged parts If parts, especially structural members, are damaged or bent they should only be repaired, if allowed, in accordance with an approved repair scheme. We recently had a case of a tailplane strut bracket, made from aluminium alloy, being straightened after it got bent. This part subsequently failed, fortunately on the ground. If no repair scheme can be found then it must be assumed that one does not exist and the part replaced. It is defiantly not acceptable to straighten such damaged parts if bent. 3.4 Airworthiness Notices Now up to issue 135. Update file on CAA web site. 3.5 Secondary damage. Reported by Southdown Aero Services. During a recent repair to a GRP glider following a relatively minor ground loop and investigating some minor damage around the tail wheel some small stress cracks were noticed. After exposing these, 300 to 400 mm delaminations were noted each side of the lower fuselage boom below the forward edge of the fin. There was on external evidence of these delaminations because the aircraft was finished in acrylic paint. Paint, being more flexible than Gel Coat, did not crack to indicate an underlying problem. It is very important that when inspecting painted GRP that extra care is taken in case any secondary damage is not apparent.
