Issue 3-2014 Date: 30/06/2014 Airworthiness Information 1 No new Airworthiness Directives this issue. 2 Airworthiness Directive compliance Advisory Reported by Derek Taylor, North Yorkshire Sailplanes It was noticed that a particular AD had been completed and certified in the aircraft records but on inspection some parts of the AD had not been completed. The mechanical work had been completed but the ASI colour banding change and flight manual amendment had not. It is very important to read the whole AD and accompanying TN to ascertain that all parts have been complied with. 3 Canopy cleaning - Warning Advisory Reported by Steve Naylor, Canopy Rescue. When cleaning canopies or other Perspex transparencies do not use glass cleaners containing Alcohol as this will promote crazing of the Perspex, not immediately but after some time. In addition window cream cleaners designed for glass may have high levels of abrasive in them to remove dirt. This is fine on glass but will scratch very expensive canopies and aircraft windscreens. Proprietary Perspex or plastic cleaners are available from your usual suppliers. 4 SZD 50-3 Puchacz Airbrake controls. Advisory BGA reportable incident. The airbrake control is supported by a telescopic (Trombone) tube arrangement and any wear on the stops can cause an over travel on the telescopic tube leading to jamming or disengagement thus preventing retraction of the air brakes. Engines 5 Rotax Distributor Advisory We have been advised that Skydrive will cease being the Rotax engine distributor for the UK from 3rd December 2014. We do not know who the new distributor will be yet but please note that service information emails will cease from Skydrive and it is not known if a new distributor will continue that service. 1 TNS-3-2014.docx4 It is recommended that owners and inspectors visit the Rotax web site for service information and service bulletin updates. http://www.flyrotax.com/home.aspx General Information MER Ultimate Shine Polish – A note of caution! Advisory Reported by J Rutherford We use a variety of car polishes to clean and protect our gliders, many use MER polish in the belief it does not contain silicone, however the “New Improved MER” (black container) does contain silicone. See the FAQ section of the MER web site. The use of polish containing silicone can have dire consequences when refinishing is required because all traces of silicone needs to be completely removed or any paint will silicone spot. Any polish containing silicone is best avoided. Compliance Statement: All mandatory inspections and modifications have been included up to the following: CAA CAP 455 Airworthiness Notices, Withdrawn.
